In 2010 the ‘Australian Standard Planning for Emergencies in Facilities’ - (AS 3745: -2010) took effect and evacuation diagrams have become an essential part of a facility’s emergency management plan.

Safety is the number one priority for all building owners and managers from schools to offices, shopping facilities to warehouses. An emergency can occur in an instant and when it happens, an evacuation diagram can be a literal life saver.

THINK ABOUT THIS…

Imagine you are on the 12th floor of a building, and you hear the fire alarm go off. You don’t panic all that much at first. You poke your head out into the lobby and see smoke, first human instinct, smoke means fire. You and the people around you start to panic. How will you know where to go?

Evacuation diagrams are an essential part of your emergency management plan. And as always, prevention is better than cure and, especially for emergencies, you need to prepare so that an incident can be dealt with safely and efficiently.

Diagrams should have a clear pictorial representation of the floor area because it is highly likely that not everybody present will be familiar with the building. An evacuation diagram shows the most direct way to the nearest fire exit.
